罗茨风机是两个相同转子形成的一种压缩机械，转子的轴线互相平行，转子中的叶轮与叶轮、叶轮与机壳、叶轮与墙板留有微小的间隙，避免相互接触，构成进气腔与排气腔互相隔绝，借助两转子反向旋转，将体内气体由进气腔送至排气腔，达到鼓风的作用。由于叶轮之间、叶轮与机壳、叶轮与墙板均存在很小的间隙，所以运行时不需要往气缸内注润滑油，也不需要油气分离器辅助设备。由于不存在转子之间的机械摩擦，因此机械效率高，整体发热少，使用寿命长等优点。罗茨风机是比较精的设备，平时保养要注意入口过滤器的清扫和更换，室内空气的干净与通畅，润滑要保证。

罗茨风机是容积式风机。其风量随转速的增减而增减、风压与电流相关。即流量受背压影响小。返料阀正是利用了罗茨风机的这个特点实现了松动风的定流量调节。在运行时注意风机的排风压力应在标牌数值以下，以免损坏其内部的压力部件。
